Nebraska Farmers Mutual Reinsurance Association

Nebraska Farmers Mutual Reinsurance Association (NFMRA) was formed in 1930.  It was created to serve Nebraska mutual insurance companies and continues that mission today.  The rational for forming the company in 1930 was similar to the reason the original founding member companies were formed.  That reason was neighbor protecting neighbor.  The original NFMRA founding member companies were formed in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, at a time when insurance protection was hard to obtain.  Large national insurance companies weren’t interested in providing coverage to Nebraska farmers.  In order to secure coverage, neighbors banded together and formed mutual insurance associations to protect each other against unforeseen loss.  Having insurance allowed these Nebraskans to better operate and grow their farms and protect their homes and possessions.   As the local mutual insurance associations grew, their concept of neighbor protecting neighbor expanded to company protecting company.  The result was NFMRA.  The original member companies differed by location, ethnic background and even language.   But they recognized that by banding together they were giving their companies and policyholders more stability and better protection against catastrophic loss.  NFMRA, governed and controlled by member companies, continues to provide that stability and protection to Nebraska mutual companies today.
